Depression isn’t “mental”
Many people don’t seem to understand that depression isn’t just a mental thing. I occasionally battle severe depression that can come on in a matter of hours. At one point, (in reference to another depressed classmate) I overheard a prefect say “I don’t see why being sad should keep you from doing your work.” Apart from the fact that mood *can* impact productivity, depression is more than feeling sad. In many people, it produces physiological symptoms. I have to deal with the most horrendous stomachaches and adrenal surges that make me shake too hard to even type. Medication helps, and most of the time I lead a normal, happy life. However, sometimes my entire body is tricked into acting incredibly ill. I can’t just stand up and say, “I’m not sick.” I am. Just not from a pathogen.
